Sue Coe witnessed a birth at the Dallas Crown Packing plant in Texas, which kills 1,500 horses a day for the European market, mostly France. When she visited the plant, Coe noticed a white mare in distress in front of a nearby restraining pen. Coe recorded what she saw: "Two workers use a six-foot whip on the horse as she gives birth, to get her to speed up and go onto the kill floor. The foal is thrown into a spare parts bucket. The boss in his cowboy hat observes from the overhead walkway."28
